TOPIC: Defense Mechanisms — How do I protect my Self?
View: What's In The Deck
Defense mechanisms are the ways that our mind attempts to protect itself from unwelcome or uncomfortable truths. Usually occurring at the subconscious level, defense mechanisms keep us from changing our behavior or thought process. This card deck (and companion Facilitator Guide) describes the most common defense mechanisms and will help you assess which ones you use. Understanding these mechanisms will allow you to avoid their use and adopt healthier, more mature responses.
Facilitator Guide — An essential companion to the Discovery Cards, the Facilitator Guide provides group leaders with everything needed to run structured, action-oriented sessions, including activity worksheets, and coaching tips. Discovery Cards are simple, practical, impactful, and increase engagement. Using behavior-based and color-categorized cards, group members will discover which defense mechanisms they frequently use to protect their addiction. Card activities spur group members to point out the defense mechanisms of others in the group as a learning opportunity. Discovery Cards increase engagement, participation, and self-discovery and spark great discussions in recovery group settings. For the best experience, buy a Group Kit, which includes everything you need to run an effective session.
